Blog project India 16-10-2020: Today we made a introduction video for the Indian students. In this video we introduced ourselves so they know a little more about us. 30-10-2020: We needed to make up some questions for the Indian students and Tom made an account for the Weebly. We also checked out our project. 13-11-2020: In this lesson we started to look for what we needed to do and we looked up information so we could make a start on the PowerPoint. 20-11-2020: Today we finished the PowerPoint. We recorded our voices into the PowerPoint and looked what we needed for the experiment. 27-11-2020: We did the experiment today. We also worked with the other group of the same topic. 04-12-2020: Today we had a meeting in Microsoft Teams with the Indian Students. They needed to prepare questions for us and we needed to prepare questions for them. 11-12-2020: Today we made up a planning who was going to work on what. And we needed to prepare questions for the interviews with the foodbank, supermarket and someone form school. 15-01-2021: We had a meeting on Microsoft Teams with Miss van Kraaij today. She checked if everything was okay with the project and if we needed any help from Miss van Kraaij. 05-02-2021: First we checked if we had everything complete; interviews, food diagram, experiment. And after that we needed to give feedback for 2 other groups. 12-02-2021: Today we need to compare our Weebly with the one of the Indian students and we asked them to fill in an rubric. 19-02-2021: We filled in a reflection form today about how we think the project went and what we could have done better. 26-02-2021: Today we fixed the weebly and added all the documents that were still missing. |

Supermarket interview
The first question I asked was what they do when food is almost expired, He said that the try to sell it with a high discount and if it is not sold by then they give the food to homeless shelters or people who really need it. He also said that they try to give food to different homeless shelters, so that more people can benefit from it.
I then asked how much food is thrown away. He replied by saying they try to decrease the amount of food thrown away as much as possible, but it is inevitable to not throw anything away. And they can’t give mouldy food to the homeless shelters because the homeless shelters can’t serve that to homeless people. Unfortunately not every supermarket gives left overs to homeless shelters.
My third question was how they decide how much food is bought by them. He told me that they buy more items that take longer to expire, and only a minimum amount of items that expire quickly so they don’t have to throw it away. He added that if you look at the storing place you will find a lot of food which mostly will not be expired in a long time.

Difference between food waste and loss
Food loss occurs before the food reaches the consumer. Food waste is when food is being sold to the consumer or at their homes, and when they throw it away then the food is wasted.
Food waste at home
The rubrics below is after we read the nine tips, and you will see the difference.
Interview member schoolboard
Too much food is wasted. Some people have to get their food at food banks because they don’t have the money and they are happy with every piece they got. It is a really big problem, daily 20% of the products in the supermarket are thrown away and in restaurants even more. So, supermarkets and restaurants are the biggest problem, because if it is not fresh they throw it away instead of eating it. We must be aware of this situation, and need to come with solutions. Bring your own food at school and eat it all or take it back home, but don’t throw it away. Make lists if you go to the supermarket, so you don’t buy stuff you don’t need. If you have left-overs from dinner, put them in the fridge, so you can eat it an other day. Also teachers should give lessons about food waste, because it is not normal how much food is thrown away.
Reflections about the Project
Reflection Tom:
I think that we are doing a great job on our project, we have been working really hard and have been improving ever since. The task division of our group improved, at the beginning we weren't that organized with our tasks. But later on we divided the tasks and everyone started working immediately. Which is in my opinion very great. Sometimes this project takes a lot of extra time at home, but we were willingly to do so, and kept on working at home. Interviewing people and the contact with the people in India made this project more fun, because some times where I had to do a lot of work at home I thought it was a bit boring. But when I look back at it I think it was not that bad. The topic that we have was a lot of fun to think about, and to get more to know about. I think because of this project I really started thinking about how much food I was actually wasting on a normal day. And I realized how happy others could be with this amount of food.
To conclude, Working on this project was fun, sometimes it took a lot of time, but we had the motivation to keep working. Also the teamwork of our group was great and we we worked really well together. And at last I started thinking about how much food I waste and how bad that actually is.
Reflection Joris:
When we started our project the task division wasn’t as well organised as it is now. After dividing the task everyone started working on what they had to do. The contact with the Indian students was sometimes quite hard because we don’t always understand what they are saying. The interviews also went swimmingly.
We had a decent amount of work to do outside the lessons, but not that much. During the lessons and as homework we worked hard, that is why we were on time for every deadline
Our topic was interesting, it was especially interesting to learn about food waste and how much food is wasted per week or per month. It was also good to read the tips about food waste and knowing that we already used a lot of these tips before even knowing about them.
We thought about food waste and realized how much food is thrown away on a daily basis, this number was very high, too high if you would ask me. It was nice to see that most supermarkets also know this and are trying to make this number go down.
All in all this project was interesting to do and it was nice to learn about the Indian students and about food waste.
Reflection Bo:
Our topic was Save food at home, I liked the topic because it was not really difficult.
At the beginning of every task we didn’t really know how we had to do it, but after asking questions to the other group, we knew what we had to do.
With almost every task we had to do, we divided it in multiple tasks, that made it easier for us and we were faster. Because there were a lot of tasks and you had to do a lot for it.
It was an interesting project, we learned some things and it is a new experience, because it was an international project. But there were also things that I didn’t really like, for example, the experiment, we had to research things that we didn’t really know why and us was told that school had special water for our project and then we were at school and they didn’t have the special water. We also have already a lot of homework and sometimes if we also had homework for the project, I had to make it in the evening and that was pretty annoying.
In conclusion, I like to thank everyone for this experience and the opportunity.
Reflection Guusje:
Overall I think we did the project very well. At first I think we did a good job in dividing all of the tasks. Everyone did his or her own part and it worked out pretty well, however we also worked together when it was needed.
We all had one thing we especially needed to focus on that was: the leader, the Weebly, the admin and the blog. So far you see all of the results of the interviews and the information all about save food at home on the Weebly. If we didn’t finish something in the lesson we needed to finish this at home. And of course with the lockdown we needed to do everything at home, but it works!
The only thing I think we could have put more effort in, was the experiment, because we didn’t do that much research for the experiment and I think if we did it would have turned out even better.
So right now I am very pleased with how our project turned out. But also I want to thank Miss van Kraaij, for guiding us through this project and of course I also want to thank the Indian students for this occasion.

Comparison
Similarities differences
- Food waste is important. 1. Give good food to foodbanks.
- Use separate waste bins. 2. Food waste lessons at school
- Use the nine food waste tips. 3. Serve smaller portions of food.
