Research
part 2
Experiments
On the 20th of November we did the experiment where we had to create an aluminium-air battery by using aluminium foil, salt water and activated charcoal. By using these materials, we made a battery that was strong enough to power a small motor. We started by making a water-salt solution where we dampened a paper towel with. We placed this paper towel on a piece of aluminium foil and as last layer, we put the active charcoal on top of the paper towel. We then clipped one end of both electrical leads to each terminal of the electrical device that we used. We clipped the other end of one of the leads to the aluminium foil and clipped the other end of the other lead on the pile of charcoal. Then the small motor started spinning. The salt in this experiment provides ions that can move through the wet paper towel and transfer charge, aluminium foil provides a supply of aluminium and activated charcoal provides electricity.
On the 27th of November we did the experiment where we had to create a hand battery by placing our hands on metal plates. We used a piece of aluminium foil and a copper plate. Using clip leads, we connected the plates to test probes of the multimeter. Then by placing one hand on each plate, we noticed a reading on the meter. When our hands were wet, we noticed that the current was higher. The small amount of sweat on your hands acts like an electrolyte solution which reacts with the copper and aluminium plates. When you touch the copper plate, a reaction happens that uses electrons and when you touch the aluminium plate, a reaction happens that releases electrons. Because of this difference in charge between the two plates, a flow of electrical charge occurs
We have made two different kinds of batteries for the experiments. This is useful because our subject is about my green trips, so we can start to use these batteries for transport so that we don’t pollute the earth if we want to go somewhere. We can use our first experiment for motors in planes, cars you name it. So batteries play a big role in transport. If we can make batteries in transport of green energy then we are a big step further in saving the planet and we already started with the electric cars. In a few years every form of transport will be on green energy.
Interview with 10 students
We asked a couple of students some questions about how they come to school. The students were of the ages of 11 up until and including 16 years old.
The first student we asked named Gaby, 12, comes to school by bike and lives 1.5 km from school. Jill, 11, the second student we asked the questions said she uses a bike as a type of transport and lives 3.5 km from school. Amy and Kate, both 14 years old, use a bicycle to come to school and both live 1.5 km away from school. The fifth student we asked named Devin who is 16 years old and the distance he needs to cycle to come to school is 2 km. Lisa lives 7.5 km away from school and comes by bike. Then we asked Mila and Jente, both 13, they both come by bike to school, but Mila cycles 2,4 km to school and Jente 950 m. We asked Lars of 16 these questions and he said that he cycles to school and lives on a distance of 1.8 km from school. The last person we asked was Renske who is 15 cycles 9 km to school every day.
In conclusion, most of the students on the Elde college cycle to school because most students live relatively close to school.

Interview with 5 teachers
We asked 5 teachers some questions about how they come to school and which distance they have to travel.
Mr. van Hoof told us that he lives 1.5 km from school and comes to school by bike. The other 4 teachers live further away. Such as miss Turi, she lives 16 km from school and uses her e-bike. Miss Sleegers comes to school by car and travels 26 km. We also asked miss Jaspers these questions and she told us that she has to travel 12 km and does this by bike or car. It depends on the weather. And as last Mr. Wolbers who lives 14 km from school and comes by car to school.
So in conclusion, most of the teachers live far away thus they use the car to travel to school. For some teachers it also depends on the weather whether they go to school by bike or car.

Interview with 5 people
We interviewed a few people about their use of public transport. The first thing we noticed is that everyone we interviewed started using public transport because they were too young to get a drivers licence, after the age of 18 most of the interviewed people started using their cars. Another thing that we saw everyone had in common was that they used the same means of transport: busses and trains, they are most popular by the people because they are easy to reach and they are cheap. The first 3 people we interviewed used public transport to go to school / university because they didn’t have a car yet, the other 2 used public transport because it was cheaper for the huge distance they had to cover every single day to get to their location. A thing that differs very much between the people we interviewed was their experiences with public transport: there were two main opinions, the first group didn’t really experience any problems with public transport, the second group experienced some trouble, for example busses and trains with huge delays and missing trains quite often because it was not clear where and at what time they had to be there. When we asked the question how they think public transport will look in a ten years’ time we got some interesting answers for example: they thought that in 10 years almost all busses run on electricity to make the world greener. Another thing we heard was that they thought the travel time should be shortened by placing more connections between places.
Interview with 2 parents
My parents thought of simple ways of greener trips, or to make it greener if more people would do the same. They both agreed of walking to the local supermarket if you are really close for instance, or going to friends that live nearby. And it’s good for your health too. Going by bicycle is also no problem. These are good ways of making trips greener for small trips of course. Also a lot of people go to the train station with their car. This is unnecessary in their opinion, we know enough people that go to work with the train and cycle to the train station. For going in to the city there is a simple solution, go by bus. It’s fast, and if a lot of people do it. Trips for a lot of people become green.

Transport in our area
How can you make your trips greener?
During our research we found multiple ways to make your trips greener. Travelling by car is the worse for the environment because you emit carbon dioxide which causes climate change. Using green energy is much better for the environment. So you could drive an electric car to solve this problem. For short distances you could also travel by bicycle or go by foot. Also using public transport is better for the environment.
Communication
part 3
|
We had 2 conference calls with the students and teachers of India. Above you see 2 pictures of the second meeting. We had to prepare some questions for the students of India and during the call we could ask each other the questions which was really nice and we learned a lot from each other.

Comparison
part 4
While comparing our research and the research of the Indian students we found out that there are some main solutions to travel in a more green way. The first solution is using green energy, so for example driving electric cars. Using public transport and travelling by bike are also good solutions. We also found a big difference in travelling to school. We usually go by bike to school and the Indian students go to school by private transport or a school van.
During the 2 conference calls we had, we could ask eachother questions. We asked them how their government makes sure that people travel in a more green way. They told us that they use a lot of public transport which we also use in the Netherlands. We had a look at their Weebly and they have done a lot of research as well. They have made multiple videos of the interviews while we have written down the interviews in a document. We think they did a great job on this project. |
Reflections
Evy: The project went very well. We divided the tasks evenly over our group, the communication also went very well between India and us. The experiments also went well and it was fun to do. Something that we could do differently next time is, we could do the work earlier if we did something at home in the beginning but overall everything went well.
The first experiment was the hardest, we took the longest for this experiment but it was fun to do. We figured out the second experiment pretty quickly so that was nice too.
We also did some interviews in the beginning when we were at school. That went well but when the lockdown started it was a lot harder to interview people, almost impossible. Luckily we did most of the interviews when we were at school.
Lastly we made a PowerPoint about Tomorrowland and the experiments. We had to do research on this topic and it was really interesting to do research about.
I learned very much from this project and how to travel greener. So go more by bike or on foot.
In conclusion I liked the project and my group because everyone did around the same amount of work.
Jim: I think our group did very well if we talk about communication and dividing group tasks. There was a good connection between our group and we had fun. I think that this is very important too. Because if there’s no fun everything goes wrong. I think that the biggest problem in the group was me, I told them before the holiday that I would finish my part. Unfortunately I forgot, they didn’t get mad at me so that was nice. I then finished it ASAP. Kajsa also did a lot for the weebly so did Koen, which was very nice of them. When we were still at school, at the beginning of the project everything went smooth as butter. Only the 1st project went a bit slower because we didn’t know what to do. But then we did everything so fast that we had a bit of free time. When making the powerpoint with our voices in it, we took it very serious. We wanted too finish that very fast. Although we had a few funny recordings. We did it pretty quick. So overall, I think our group is well organised, serious and fun to work with. So that’s basically it. There is nothing more and nothing less. To summarize it, everything about the group is great. Just sometimes communication errors.
Kajsa: I think we worked together on this project really well. In the beginning we still had to find out about the different things that had to be finished but we divided the tasks equally and helped each other where necessary. Some tasks were not always finished in time by some students but together we made it work. For the first experiment, we could have prepared better in my opinion but in the end it worked out well. Our communication with each other was really good, we made a group app with the 4 of us and via that we way we could ask questions when we needed help and shared the tasks that had to be done. For this project I had to add all our information to the Weebly. At first I had no idea how this would work because I never worked on a website, but after a while I got the hang of it and I am glad how our website turned out.
In conclusion, we worked together really well and I am satisfied with the end result.
Koen: The cooperation within our group went very well, the tasks were well and evenly distributed and everyone did those tasks. The tasks were not always finished in time but then we helped each other to get to a final result. The communication within our group but also with the Indian students went very good as well, we used WhatsApp to stay in touch and share information with the Indian students. We also made a WhatsApp group with our group so we could always help each other out if anyone had troubles finishing the work. Everything we did and found was posted on the Weebly and I am very satisfied with how the website turned out.
Now the project is nearly finished I am satisfied with the final result, the cooperation and the communication within our group and with the Indian students !!
Luuk: Overall our communication went pretty well there were a couple of times were our communication could have been better, but in general it was good. We also divided our tasks evenly and made sure when we were at school that someone always did something. Our experiments also went really well, we had a bit more trouble with the 1st experiment because we couldn’t figure it out at first but the 2nd one went really easily and it worked really well. Somethings that could have been better is our communication, even though it went pretty well we had some communication errors that we could improve on. Secondly we could have been better on our timings since we were later on a couple assignments. I think the way we worked was pretty well we divided tasks and then gave a deadline while this deadline wasn’t always followed it still worked pretty well. When we were back in school our teamwork went really, we did the projects quickly with each other and everyone always had something to do. Since we are home now we haven’t really done any teamwork mostly just everyone making their part and then some other usually Jim or Kajsa putting it on our Weebly.
