Experiment
part 2
This is a short video about the experiment. We really enjoyed doing this experiment and we have learned a lot from it.
interview with 11 students
At school we intervieved some students of the first grade and asked their opinion on our topic and subtopics.
We made some graphs about the answers we got from them.
You can see the graps below.
For us, the most important question was: Do you think that the ELDE College manages waste well?
73% said yes, but 27% said no, so we asked what they could do better at our school.
The best answer we have heard was: ‘I think they can manage the waste even better, because we can maybe make seperate bins for different materials (such as: paper, plastic, etc).

interview recycle company
This is a short interview with someone from a recycling company. We asked him some questions about what they do and why they started doing this.
Summary of the interview recycling company
I asked some questions to a plastic recycling company in Schijndel called ‘Plastic recycling company.’
The first thing they do is collecting the plastic, people bring their plastic to the company most of the times.
If they have the plastic, they first want to determine the type of material and look at its chemical and physical properties.
After that, the different material types are separated from each other.
Then they will shred and grind the sorted plastics to an even grain size. During the shredding process, they separate all dust particles and metals from the regrind. By means of our modern production lines, they are able to offer a pure end product which is very suitable as a raw material for many products.
After we recycled it they sell it to various companies, mostly companies buy it for small things like straws or some kind of music instruments.
I asked him why he chose this job:
‘My dad wanted to starts its own company and do something good for the world.
When I was a bit older I also started realising that it was really important everybody needs to do something good for the world, that is how I started this company with my dad.’

report: Interview with a person responsible for waste management at school
For the interview with someone who helps with the rubbish at the Elde College, I interviewed a concierge. I asked the concierge about how our school manages the waste, what kind of rubbish we separate and how the students help with the rubbish at our school. He explained that we separate paper and plastic from the rest of the rubbish. And after they have collected all the rubbish, that it will be picked up and brought to the dump. The concierge also explained that every week different students have to help the concierges with cleaning the auditorium and collecting the rubbish. The students also have to separate the paper form the rest of the waste. I also asked the concierge on his opinion about the system for the rubbish here at school. He said that he thinks it would be easier if there were more separation bins, especially in the auditorium. Because now everything is thrown all together in the little bins on the table. But besides this he things the system for the rubbish at our school is good.
Research B: sub questions
Research B: sub questions
Describe your school ( number of pupils, what kind of building, etc.) add some pictures.
The Elde College has 3 different buildings, A/C, B and E. the oldest building is building A, this is the building where the 2nd, 3rd and 4th years have their classes and everyone except the 1st year students have their break. After some time they attached building C to the building. Building B is the building where the student on higher levels have their classes. The building E is the newest building and in this building the first year of the lower levels have their classes. In total the Elde college has 1907 students.
Rubbish produced at school.
Are younger students producing more rubbish than older students? What about boys and girls?
I don’t think that there is a difference in how much rubbish they produce, because everyone uses the paper or plastic when they buy something in the cafeteria, so I think it is equal.
What kind of rubbish is being produced by students at school (plastic, paper, food, etc.)?
The rubbish that is produced at school is paper, where the students can write on or when they print something for the classes. The school also produces plastic, and they wrap this around the food they sell at the canteen. The school also produces food, and this food they sell in the canteen, but when it is not sold they have to throw it away.
What happens with the rubbish? What happens with the rubbish after the breaks?
When there is rubbish it gets thrown in a bin and when they are full it gets collected and then they throw it away. And the same is after the break, the rubbish on the tables get collected and is all thrown away.
Are students involved in collecting the rubbish, in cleaning the canteens?
Yes, every week there is a different group of students that have to help with clean the floor and tables and they have to collect the rubbish that is thrown away in the break.
Why are students throwing some rubbish on the ground?
I think that when the students don’t see a bin to throw away their rubbish that they just throw it on the ground because they don’t want to keep it with them either and they don’t want to go looking for a garbage can.
School policy
What is the school policy about use of paper/ recycling paper?
We have to separate the paper from the rest of the rubbish and because we don’t want to waste anything the papers we have at school are only used for the test or things you get a grade for and paper for your notes you have to bring yourself.
Are there any methods to recycle waste at school/ separate garbage?
We separate the paper from the rest of the garbage but the rest goes in the same bin.
What are the school regulations about rubbish/chewing gum? What happens if a student throws something on the ground?
We are not allowed to have chewing gum in the classes and if we had them in the break we have to throw them away and we have to throw the rubbish away in the garbage cans.
Has ICT-technology contributed to reduce the use of paper at school?
Yes, because now we don’t have to write essays or reports but we can make them in word.
Which methods can be used to limit the amount of rubbish? Name at least two.
1. Work more on the computer, so we don’t have to waste any paper.
2. That we use instead of plastic bags for the food paper bags.

contact with the students from India
part 3
underneath you can find a few pictures about the contact with the students from India.
what did we learn from the contact with the Indian students?
We learned a lot, mostly the differences between the 2 countries.
We prepared by watching a video and set up a powerpoint,
after that we made some questions we could ask the students and we got interesting answers.

preparations
We prepared for the videoconference by thinking of questions that we could ask them and we came up with 2 about how they handle the waste and rubbish at their school. we also decided that Vinny and Mara were going to ask the Indian students the questions and that Jens and Kim were going to answer their questions. We made sure that we always had paper and a pen in front of us during the lessons. we tried to make as much notes as possible. We started planning this entire project from the beginning, that is why we were able to finish it on time.
comparison
part 4
Similarities:
1. Both, the Indian students and we throw waste into the bin, and also both separate the rubbish (E.g. paper in the paper bin).
2. Another similarity is that we have the most rubbish from food, or things where food is packed in, like the plastic around the meat when you buy it in the store.
Differences:
In India they even separate some more rubbish, for example, they don’t only separate the paper from other materials, they also separate dry and wet waste.

reflection
Reflection on the experiment (Mara):
I think that the project of EU-mind went very well. We worked very well together when it was needed and sometimes we divided the tasks and everyone got their own tasks and worked on those things for their own. This went really well, because everyone made sure that they had finished the tasks that they had assigned (most of the time the leader divided the tasks, because than it was just clear who had to do what to come to a great end result.) In the first lesson we decided who would we responsible for what, so the admin, Weebly (editor) and the leader. Almost every lesson we succeeded to finish in time but if we didn’t we made sure that we finished it at home or stayed at school a bit longer. From our side the project went well, but we had some difficulties with having contact with the Indian students. We did send some questions and our research in the group chat on WhatsApp, but they didn’t really respond on that. They did asked us some questions via WhatsApp and of course we answered those in a good way. Sometimes we weren’t sure what we had to do, but if this was the case we asked our fellow students or our teacher. We always succeeded to figure it out and to finish the assignments. I am very happy of how our project turned out. Of course there is always room for improvement but I am still satisfied with the end result. I am very proud of our group!

Reflection (Kim)
I think that the project went well, because we worked well together as a group and we made a division of the tasks we had to do. I think our topic was a good topic and it was interesting to hear what the Indian students had to say about it. The contact with the Indian students wasn’t really good, because it took a while for them to respond to our questions. And I think that when we called with the Indian students it would have been better if the groups with the same subjects called together instead of the entire group.

I think that this project went pretty well, we all worked together and made a good division for all the tasks we had to do. I think our topic was really interesting and I think we all learned a lot about it. The contact between the students from India wasn't that great but it was still pretty interesting to hear about what they did with waste management themselves. I think it was a pretty difficult project but I still enjoyed doing it. I especially liked the experiment, I didn't know that you could make plastic from potatoes. In overall I really enjoyed it and I would like to do such a project again.

Reflection (VInny)
Overall I really liked the project and would definitely do it again, beneath I wrote about some things that I thought were nice, or could be done differently next time. Working in the group with people I did was really nice and I really enjoyed it, we divided the tasks good and when necessary we worked together very well. Honestly, I think I liked the experiment the best, because you don’t know what is going to happen in the begin, but when we saw the result we could be very proud of ourselves! The contact with India was really interesting in my opinion because the live on the other side of the world and live a totally different life there. It was really fun to see that there were so many differences, but also a lot of similarities between the two countries, and even the two schools.
You saw many differences especially between how they, and we, handle with the waste and rubbish. Some things could definitely improve if we would do it again, such as: respond better and maybe faster when we or they asked questions.
Another thing that could really improve is participate better in the video calls with the Indian students.
